Unusual structural and chemical characteristics of the Dufour gland in the ant Meranoplus diversus

چکیده
The Dufour gland of both queens and workers of Meranoplus diversus is very large. The reservoir is lined with flat epithelial cells, which usually contain smooth endoplasmic reticulum but also show the unusual accumulation of electrondense inclusions. Chemically, the gland contains an unusual mixture of long-chain fatty acids and their derivatives, including hydrocarbons, ketones and amines with long-chain substituents, hydroquinone, and sugars. Some of the substances identified are already known as insect defensive compounds against other arthropods.

Exocrine chemistry of the myrmicine ant Zacryptocerus pusillus (Hymenoptera: Formicidae).
Minor workers of the ant Zacryptocerus pusillus have unusual exocrine secretions in both their mandibular and Dufour glands. The mandibular glands contain a 3:1 mixture of 4-heptanone and 4-heptanol, a mixture found only in the related species Z. varians. The Dufour gland contains a mixture of 13 aldehydes from C9 to C18, not previously encountered in ant secretions. The venom glands gave varia...
متن کاملThermal Diffusion Factor in Gas Mixture-Dufour Effect (I)
The thermal diffusion factor, aT, for a binary gas mixture is calculated on the basis of nonequilibrium thermodynamics. A new formula for aT is derived and this factor is given for several paris of gases according to this formula.
متن کاملANT COLONY SEARCH METHOD IN PRACTICAL STRUCTURAL OPTIMIZATION
This paper is concerned with application and evaluation of ant colony optimization (ACO) method to practical structural optimization problems. In particular, a size optimum design of pin-jointed truss structures is considered with ACO such that the members are chosen from ready sections for minimum weight design. The application of the algorithm is demonstrated using two design examples with pr...
متن کاملMorphology and Chemical Contents of Dufour Glands of Pseudomyrmex Ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)
The morphology and ultrastructure of the Dufour gland of a pseudomyrmecine ant is de scribed. The gland has an unusually large volume but possesses a very thin epithelial lining. Its morphology does not constitute a specific subfamily character as in some ant subfamilies. Analysis by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry of the glands of three species showed them all to be rich in saturated lin...
متن کاملUnusual Locations of the Hydatid Cyst: A Review from Iran
Hydatid disease is caused by Echinococcus granulosus and is endemic in many parts of the world, including Iran. This parasitic tapeworm can produce cysts in almost every organ of the body, with the liver and lung being the most frequently targeted organs. However, the cyst tends to appear in different and sometimes unusual body sites in various geographical areas of the world. This revi...
